If you would like to help support the animals and animal welfare organisations in Ukraine, we thank you for your donation with the keyword: Emergency aid Ukraine.

The war is not over

It is with great concern that we observe the misery caused by the war that broke out in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. More and more people are fleeing after the Russian invasion, and only a few are able to take their animals with them. The flow of refugees towards the West is huge, and fortunately so is the solidarity with the people. At the borders with Ukraine, volunteers and employees of NGOs (including NetAP) provide support and help wherever they can. We are also helping the refugees and their animals with our partner at Bucharest Airport and Bucharest Central Station.

Our partner vets in Romania treat the animals of refugees free of charge. Most of the costs incurred are reimbursed by NetAP on an ongoing basis. Additional accommodation has been created to house animals. We also cover a large part of the resulting costs.

We are in daily contact with Ukrainian animal shelters, rescue centers and animal welfare organizations in order to meet their needs and provide them with appropriate help wherever possible. Fortunately, we are able to count on the support of one of our dedicated volunteers, who herself comes from Ukraine and was actively involved in animal welfare in her home country. She speaks both Ukrainian and Russian, which means that we can also help animal welfare workers who are unable to ask for help from the West due to a lack of language skills. Many pets have been left behind and farm animals in particular remain unattended. We are doing everything in our power to support those who are taking care of the animals in these difficult times. Financial support for food reserves and medicines is a priority so that, where possible, purchases can be made locally and, above all, immediately.

Providing emergency aid in disaster situations is something that NetAP has done time and again since it was founded. However, we have to be sure that our aid reaches its destination, and that is not easy in a war situation. The longer the war situation lasts, the more difficult it becomes to provide the necessary aid. We are constantly making funds available from our disaster fund. How long these last also depends on the donations we receive.

Financial support

The following organisations have received financial support to date (in some cases several times):

Association House of Patrocle in Suceava

Our partner on the Romanian border with Ukraine. The animal welfare activists stand 24/7 at the border in the north of Romania (Siret) and look after the animals of the refugees. They regularly drive into Ukraine and distribute food and urgently needed medicines. We finance a large proportion of these relief supplies by purchasing them directly on site. Our vet Bogdan Dascalu is also regularly on duty with the Casa Lui Patrocle team, examining, treating, vaccinating and chipping the animals directly at the border station.

Dim Sirka in Ivano-Frankivsk

The animal welfare organization has two animal shelters with around 700 dogs. At the same time, they are currently also coordinating the procurement of food for smaller animal shelters and stray animals. Our volunteer Victoria knows the animal welfare organization personally and used to work there actively.

Animal shelters in Oleshka and Kherson

The animal shelters look after over 700 animals and need a supply of food and medicine. They also take in abandoned animals and feed stray animals.

UAnimals - Ukrainian animal rights organisation

Largest animal welfare organization in the Ukraine. Helps various smaller animals that otherwise hardly get any help from the West. Has a large volunteer network and tries to penetrate areas where no one dares to go.

Iryna Sytenko in Dnipro

A dedicated individual who has taken in almost 90 animals. She only speaks Ukrainian and Russian and therefore had little chance of getting help from the West.

A Chance for Live is an animal shelter in Nikopol, run by Voshun Olena. There are 250 animals there, and she keeps the weakest, handicapped ones at home. She only speaks Ukrainian and Russian and therefore had little chance of getting help from the West.

The cat's house "the Wet Noses" in Poltava

They take care of abandoned pets and have numerous foster homes. Originally the focus was only on cats, but during the war they now care for all pets in need.

Biosphere Reserve Askania Nova, Kherson

The reserve is home to many animals and plants, including bison, antelopes, wild horses, ostriches, llamas, zebras, numerous bird species, etc. Due to the Russian occupation, the reserve fell into disrepair.

Lviv

‘Home of the rescued Animals’ is almost flooded with animals from the war zones and is bursting at the seams. There is a lack of food, medicine, cages and everything else. We help to cover the immense costs for the animals.

Kyiv City Clinics of Veterinarian Medicine in Kiew

Veterinarians take care of dogs, cats and other pets, coordinate food deliveries and consultations (also by telephone, where a visit is no longer possible). They also have to look after the Borodyanka animal shelter, which was badly hit. Unfortunately, contact with the shelter was broken off for over a month due to the occupation by Russian troops and the animals were left unattended. About three quarters of the animals died in agony.

Marina Budko, Borodyanka

Volunteers from “The Tailed Gang” managed to go to the shelter in Borodyanka on April 1, 2022 to take care of the surviving dogs. Since the beginning of March, no one had any information about the condition of the animals in the shelter because Borodyanka was occupied by the Russians. The pictures the volunteers saw were unimaginably horrific. Most of the dogs had starved to death, died of thirst or had been bitten to death. Around 120 survived, but are in a very critical condition, so we provided emergency financial aid to the volunteers to cover the veterinary costs.

Noah’s Ark is an animal shelter in Dnipro that was confronted with a flood of abandoned animals for which space had to be created. They also regularly go to the embattled areas to help with food or to rescue animals. Our emergency aid covers part of these costs.

Best Friends, Kiew

In the middle of a war zone, the animal shelter is very affected by the consequences. In March, the shelter burned down, but fortunately most of the animals could be saved. There are over 400 dogs, over 300 cats, horses, foxes and raccoons living at the shelter.

Host a friend shelter, Ivano-Frankivsk

First opened in 2020, it was intended as a center for handicapped animals or animals in need of care. When the war broke out, the shelter also took in other dogs and cats on an ongoing basis. Well over 100 animals are housed at the shelter.

and of course our Romanian partners, for the treatment and reception of Ukrainian animals.

Further support

Medical assistance and medication

In collaboration with the Swiss Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (STVT), the Mittelland Veterinary Clinic and many other vets and committed private individuals, we were able to send the first transport of relief supplies to Poland on February 11, 2022 with veterinary items that are urgently needed in Ukraine. From there, the items were forwarded to various vets in Ukraine. Safoso then set up a fixed international collection point for veterinary supplies in Poland in collaboration with the Ukrainian veterinary service. Goods are sorted there and forwarded to where they are urgently needed. We regularly provide relief supplies when transports travel from Switzerland to Ukraine. However, we mainly buy medical supplies directly in Romania and pass them on to Ukrainian vets so that they can be used locally.

Food donations

We mainly finance the purchase of food directly in Ukraine, wherever possible. We hardly ever send food from Switzerland, but we buy food in Romania in the border region for places where there is no more food and transport it to Ukraine. It is then distributed in Ukrainian distribution centers and goes to animal shelters in need or is given to pet owners who can no longer buy food. We are constantly handing over food donations in Switzerland to organizations such as animal charities that support refugees with pets or to organizations that carry out transports to Ukraine.

Further relief supplies

We also procure other relief supplies directly in the border region so that we can respond specifically to the respective needs. Most warehouses are full of leads, dog harnesses, bowls and other animal supplies, as relief supplies are always being sent. However, certain items are often missing, which we then immediately purchase locally. As long as it is possible to buy locally, it is cheaper and more ecological. In Switzerland, we have handed over various relief supplies such as beds, bowls, litter trays etc. directly to distribution points.

Accommodation of animals

Many of our Romanian partners have created additional space for refugee animals. The animals can stay until the owners have organised themselves and can collect their animals again. NetAP helps with the costs involved. In particular, one of our cat shelters in Tartasesti is available for Ukrainian cats.

Antiparasitics

There is a great shortage of antiparasitic drugs in Ukraine and many animal shelters complain that the military are constantly bringing animals in from the street or from homes that are completely infested with fleas and worms. As far as we can, we are constantly procuring flea and worming medication and handing it over to couriers who take it to where it is most needed. By the end of April, we had already distributed over 4000 doses of antiparasitics.

Spay and Neuter

Together with Noah’s Ark in Dnipro and A Chance for Life in Nikopol, we have started a neutering program to prevent the animals left behind and animals on the street from multiplying in this terrible situation. We also finance ongoing neutering of cats that have fled to Switzerland with their owners.

Media reports about our work

Important information on the situation in Switzerland

Entry with pets from Ukraine: The entry regulations have been temporarily eased. The applicable rules can be found on the website of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO (Attention: The entry restrictions were lifted again on 1 August 2023!)

Veterinary help for animals from Ukraine: Many vets offer free or heavily discounted help for the pets of refugees. In individual cases, we help by covering the costs, but only with prior verification of the case and only with our partner vets. A list of veterinarians who help at a reduced price or free of charge can be found on the website of the Society of Swiss Veterinarians GST

Accommodation for refugees with animals: The Tasso Help platform lists offers of accommodation for refugees with animals.

Free food donations for animals from Ukraine: There are numerous places where pet food can be donated free of charge. NetAP supports various of these organizations with food donations, such as the Schweizer Tiertafel. We have also made direct food deliveries in some communities for the animals of refugees who have been taken in. You can find offers, for example, at www.swisshelpforukrainianpets.ch.

ua-pets@netap.ch
