Animal shelter help Menorca

There are two animal shelters and a cat rescue centre on the Balearic island of Menorca. The current Animal Welfare Act stipulates that animals may be killed 21 days after entering the shelter. For a long time, however, this was only practised in the animal shelters if they were completely overcrowded or the animals were highly aggressive or terminally ill. After the local animal welfare organisations (Protectora Mao and Protectora Ciutadella) took over the two animal shelters completely at the beginning of 2022 and made numerous improvements, no more animals will be euthanised if they have a chance of regaining their quality of life, even if the shelters are full and/or the costs involved are high.

From 2012 to 2022, NetAP carried out one to several neutering missions per year on the island, ensuring that cat suffering decreased significantly and the animal shelters were no longer overcrowded. During the missions, we regularly visited the animal shelters and treated the dogs and cats against internal and external parasites and provided other medical measures.

We have special links with the Tanca cat sanctuary, which is also run by the Protectora d’Animals de Ciutadella. Cats that nobody wants find refuge at the Tanca. With very limited financial and human resources, the Tanca was overwhelmed. The rescue centre had to be restructured and renovated. Together with the operators, NetAP drew up a plan to transform Tanca step by step into a well-organised, modern cat sanctuary with a cat-friendly structure. Firstly, all the cats were tested, chipped and vaccinated. New enclosures separated the healthy cats from the sick ones. A large, permanently installed garden shed was integrated into all the enclosures, offering the groups protection from the weather. All volunteers were trained in hygiene and organisation. A quarantine station and a treatment centre have also been built. Many other steps have been planned and are being implemented on an ongoing basis. Unfortunately, the Tanca had to move in 2020 and finally found new premises in an old, disused animal shelter. Although this offers less space, it has other advantages. In addition, the intensive publicity surrounding the move has resulted in more cats being adopted.

All three animal shelters are very close to our hearts and we regularly support them with advice, relief supplies, medical missions and financial support.
