Nikopol is a large city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in the south of Ukraine and has a population of around 120,000. Since the outbreak of the war, the city has been repeatedly under attack. Many people have fled and left their animals behind. The animal shelter ‘A Chance for Live’ is run by Olena Voshun. There are 250 animals at the shelter, and she keeps the weakest, disabled ones at home. Oleana only speaks Ukrainian and Russian and therefore had little chance of receiving help from the West. Since the beginning of the war, we have been supporting Oleana in caring for the animals. However, as the number is increasing and the streets are filling up with abandoned animals, we decided to set up a neutering programme in August 2022. Even if the safety of the animals cannot always be guaranteed during the war, we can at least prevent more animals from being born into this terrible situation.
