On 19 September 2021, the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on the Canary Island of La Palma. The eruption lasted from 19 September to 13 December 2021 and is considered the longest known eruption of a volcano on La Palma. In terms of damage, it was also the most devastating in the island’s history.

Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the red-hot lava. The island was declared a disaster area. While there were emergency scenarios for the people, the situation was very difficult for the animals. The local animal welfare organisations we were in contact with tried to save as many animals as possible. Dogs and cats were placed in shelters while rescuers were constantly rescuing more animals. Over 5000 people were homeless.

NetAP provided immediate emergency financial aid so that the most important things for the animals could be organised locally. In October, one of our vets was on site to assess and implement further aid measures. Thanks to a major donor, she was able to provide sustainable help for six months.
