In 2018, we started a close collaboration with the social clinic “Sache Vet” in Tartasesti. The castration program financed by NetAP enables destitute pet owners to castrate their dogs and cats free of charge. In addition, stray animals are caught, treated and neutered on an ongoing basis, for which we have equipped local animal rights activists with traps and other professional equipment.
In 2019, we financed a mobile clinic so that the team can also carry out neutering operations in places where the need is great and medical care is not available. In 2021, the mobile clinic was officially recognized by the authorities as a clinic on wheels, previously it was only approved as an ambulance.
To date, we have built a total of six cat shelters on the grounds of the “Sache Vet” clinic to provide a home for stray cats confiscated by the ASPA (veterinary authority) – whether temporarily or forever. With our support, our partner was able to expand its cooperation with the ASPA to extend its commitment to cats. Due to a lack of accommodation options, the ASPA had previously mostly refrained from confiscating cats.
In 2020, we were able to acquire the land next to the clinic for ‘Sache Vet’ with the aim of securing more space for animals and for a larger clinic.
Another milestone in cat protection in Romania was achieved in the fall of 2023. With our support, “Sache Vet” took part in a competition organized by the city of Bucharest, in which the best project proposal was to be rewarded with 100,000 euros for implementation. We proposed neutering the many street cats in and around Bucharest. The population was able to vote on the proposals submitted and the cat program won. ASPA Bucharest (the local veterinary office) was entrusted with the implementation of the program and was looking for a professional and reliable practice. “Sache Vet was awarded the contract and shortly afterwards began neutering street cats, with our mobile clinic also providing valuable services. As the whole thing also received a lot of media coverage, the telephone lines at “Sache Vet” were red-hot and up to 90 calls a day came in from people wanting to register cats. This clearly shows that there is also a great willingness among the population to prevent suffering through neutering, as long as it does not fail due to lack of funds. As part of this project, an additional 970 cats were neutered by the end of the year.
