Spaying and Neutering Program Mallorca

Since 2015, we have been working on the island of Mallorca to combat the immense misery caused by cats with on-site operations and, above all, by covering the costs of neutering. In many places on Mallorca, cats are labelled as pests, which makes our work extremely difficult. In many places, the animals are regularly chased away or killed. The will of the authorities to solve the situation in a sustainable and animal-friendly way is barely visible. Year after year, countless cats are abandoned or die in the large animal shelters ‘Natura Park’ or ‘Son Reus’, which definitely do not deserve to be called shelters. In order to spare the animals an agonising death, they are often bought free by local animal rights activists. Efforts to have these animals handed over to animal welfare organisations free of charge have always failed. It seems as if the operators are making big money at the expense of the animals.

After corona made cat misery many times worse, the new Animal Welfare Act should bring about an improvement in the long term. However, visible progress is likely to be a long time coming. In any case, owners would have to have cats neutered and chipped by law. At the moment, there are even more cats being abandoned in many places. Time will tell whether the law will have an effect.

Our local volunteers are travelling in the area of Cala Pi and Palma. Unfortunately, it is not possible to cover other areas.
