In the early summer of 2014, a heatwave in the Bay of Bengal claimed numerous lives among humans and animals. Half of our local partner’s employees fall ill with fever, dizziness and gastrointestinal problems. The rest of the team tries everything to keep the animals alive. As numerous additional animals, such as the emus, had to be taken in a few weeks earlier, the animal shelter and the kitten farm have too few shady places. Moreover, cows, dogs, cats and many other animals cannot find water on the streets.
A short time later, a gas explosion claims further lives. While immediate measures are taken for the people, there is no one who wants to look after the affected animals. Our partner’s rescue teams immediately set out to rescue the injured animals, provide emergency medical assistance and transfer animals that are fit for transportation to the animal farm.
Finally, in mid-July 2014, VSPCA and the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation sign a contract that allows us to set up permanent water points on the roads so that the thirsty animals can be better cared for during future heat waves.
NetAP financed 50% of the total costs for the construction of roofs and water points and also contributed to the rescue costs for the victims of the gas explosion.
