Street animals / castrations in Menorca, Spain

We carried out our first mission in Menorca in 2012. Countless further neutering weeks followed. We were on the ground up to four times a year, working alongside local animal welfare organisations to tackle the massive scale of cat suffering. From 2016 onwards, the situation began to improve noticeably, and we reduced our missions to one or two per year. Eventually, individual local councils began to set aside a budget for neutering, and we were able to further reduce our involvement. The coronavirus pandemic set us back a little once again, as for a time no neutering operations were permitted at all. However, with three intensive campaigns from late 2021 to early 2022, we were able to make up for this setback. All local councils now cover the costs of neutering, and the suffering of cats is largely under control. All over the island, you come across small colonies of neutered cats with the familiar notch in their left ear, which are monitored and cared for by animal welfare organisations. New arrivals are quickly identified, caught, treated and neutered. Our support is now limited to individual cases and providing food.

The collaboration with local animal welfare organisations is exemplary. Cat welfare on Menorca can be described as a success story. The example of Menorca shows what can be achieved when everyone pulls together.
