Greece is also teeming with stray animals. Although it is mandatory to have pets neutered, little attention is paid to this. Pets mate with stray animals and are constantly reproducing. Offspring are all too often abandoned, often entire families. Unfortunately, killing is still widespread.
Since 2012, we have repeatedly helped local animal welfare organizations with on-site missions (Crete, Santorini and Rhodes) and with the delivery of relief supplies. We also advise third-party organizations on the implementation of local neutering programmes.
Since 2018, we have primarily supported the animal welfare organization “Tea Cup Rescue” in Agios Stefanos near Athens. It started with emergency aid when there was a major fire and many animals were seriously injured by the blaze. In 2019, we started a small neutering program, which was gradually expanded. No state aid is expected for the cats. Although funds are available, they are almost exclusively used for dogs. Cats are still very often simply poisoned if they are unwanted. In addition to financing the castration program, we also provide emergency financial aid and support with relief supplies, especially antiparasitics.
